Geo-information Engineering is about acquisition, processing, storing, dissemination, querying, analysis and presentation of geo-data and geo-information. The resulting geo-information is needed for a wide variety of earth-related activities performed by mankind. As a result of the many changes taking place in society, the need for geo-information is steadily increasing. This provides many opportunities for the field of geo-information engineering to grow. The title of this book, Geo-information Engineering, Changing Technology in a Changing Society reflects this vision. The book consists of two parts, preceded by an introductory chapter. The introductory chapter sets the scene of changes going on in society.
.
Part I consists in a selection of papers with a visionary character, earlier published as Pinpoint columns in GIM International from 2000 onwards. These papers provide opinions about the role of changing geo-information technology in a changing society.
.
Part II treats changing technology, with an emphasis on the primary data-acquisition part of geo-information engineering, in particular photogrammetry and remote sensing. Organisational issues related to the co-ordinated production and dissemination of geo-information are addressed, whilst education issues are also considered. |
