Australian Start-up Unveils Smartphone-powered 3D Scanner

Australian tech start-up Eora 3D recently unveiled a new kind of 3D scanner entirely powered by a modern smartphone. The Eora 3D scanner is completely driven by a smartphone and requires only a one-time calibration. 3D models are rendered in-app, from which users can view, edit, or share or export them in high resolution. The scanner has a range of up to 1 metre and captures in full colour.

Founders Asfand Khan, Richard Boers and Rahul Koduri were working on a solar project where measuring the surface of a parabolic dish through a 3D scanner cost nearly USD20,000. Frustrated due to the lack of accessibility to a high-precision measurement scanner, they decided to build their own. The goal is to put this scanners into the hands of designers, makers and artists everywhere. Earlier this year, Eora 3D was awarded best start-up winner at Seedstars World Australia and is among the finalists to attend Seedstars World 2016 in Geneva, Switzerland.

The 3D scanner will be launched through a Kickstarter campaign in September 2015. Pricing will start at USD199. The app will be free to download through the App Store and Play Store.

Richard Boers, lead product architect at Eora 3D, sees this is a game changer for designers and makers everywhere. There is yet to be a 3D scanner that is affordable, fast and reliable, he said.
