Pathway Services Selects iXBlue's New ATLANS-C

Following iXBlue’s ATLANS-C product release in February 2014, Pathway Services, the largest road and pavement-condition service provider in the USA, decided to put ATLANS-C to field test, focusing on its need for higher continuity and accuracy of positioning in challenging urban and road conditions. After these road tests, Pathway decided to purchase a number of ATLANS-C inertial navigation GNSS systems for mobile mapping applications.

ATLANS-C fibre-optic gyroscope and inertial navigation system with its integrated smart coupling technique fills a gap for robust high-performance requirements for use in demanding applications such as Pathway’s PathRunner data collection vehicles (DCV).

Scott Mathison, vice president operations at Pathway Services, said, his company operates a fleet of 22 PathRunner DCV’s and has 60 worldwide. They have collected over two million miles of centre-line data in the USA and are looking for better solutions, which is why they were keen to test iXBlue’s ATLANS-C. Integration, calibration and initial testing were completed in less than half a day. They have tested multiple data types with the ATLANS-C, including real-time kinematic and virtual reference station differential global positioning system, road geometrics, ground penetrating radar, digital imaging, roadway asset extraction and Lidar data.

Pathway currently uses a position and orientation system that has a larger form factor and far greater hardware requirements than iXBlue’s system. The evaluation showed the ATLANS-C not only delivers higher performance but also is a more cost-effective solution. The company decided to purchase a number of systems right away after the tests.

ATLANS-C brings to customers the versatility of having one system for both land and air applications and can be described as a north seeking gyro in ‘all-in-one’ solution. The equipment supplies a full heading accuracy in a GPS denied environments (cities, harbours, rural, and urban canyons). ATLANS-C embeds iXBlue’s latest fibre-optic inertial navigation system for high performance and ‘no maintenance concept’.
