Intel Acquires German UAV Developer Ascending Technologies

US-based technology multinational Intel has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the German developer and manufacturer of UAVs, Ascending Technologies. In a statement, Intel indicated that it regards UAVs as offering an incredible opportunity for innovation across a multitude of industries. As a result, the company is positioning itself at the forefront of this opportunity to increasingly integrate the computing, communications, sensor and cloud technology required to make drones smarter and more connected.

Ascending Technologies is a leading developer and manufacturer of autopilot systems, UAVs and multi-rotor technology for professional, civil and research UAV applications. Ascending Technologies performs pioneering work in sensor-data processing and flight altitude control. With its in-house development capabilities in Krailling, near Munich, the German company is continually setting new market trends based on key technologies.

Integrated technology

Intel intends for the Ascending Technologies team to continue supporting their current customers while also collaborating with Intel’s Perceptual Computing team to develop UAV technology that can help drones fly with greater awareness of their environments. In partnership, the American company has already combined Ascending Technologies’ sense-and-avoid algorithms with the real-time depth-sensing capability of the Intel RealSense technology. Together these technologies can improve the safety of drones by helping them avoid obstacles and hence collisions.
