The Pacific GIS&RS Conference began in the late 1990s
with a handful of GIS practitioners who wanted to share
their developments and lessons learnt to the wider Fiji GIS
community. Since then the Conference has expanded into the
largest regional meeting of GIS and Remote Sensing users
in Pacific region. Participation has also grown from forestry
mapping to utilities and other applications.

We encourage Pacific Island users to present their developments
and applications to a wider audience. This has attracted many
software and hardware resellers and image data providers
which has resulted in partnerships with users in the region to
develop and adapt GIS&RS applications.

The first three days of the Conference are dedicated to
presentations of a wide range of GIS&RS applications. A
schedule of presentations will be reflected on the Conference
website.

As the technology has matured in the region we have seen
a need to adapt the Conference with the addition of a forth
day for greater interaction. On Day 4 Pacific GIS officers and
representatives of software, hardware and data distribution
companies can now discuss how GIS and RS can be and is
being applied under Pacific conditions.

We also provide an opportunity for special sessions prior to
the Conference, in this case Monday 22 November. This is an
opportunity for specialised training sessions to be announced
shortly through the Conference website.

The Pacific Island hospitality has always been a drawcard
for visitors to the Pacific. In hosting the Pacific GIS&RS
Conference, we provide a platform for knowledge exchange
and an opportunity for others to experience our cultures and
traditions.

3D Scanning of Historic Sugar Factories

The Alliance for Integrated Spatial Technologies at the University of South Florida, USA, recently worked with the Florida Park Service on a project to document the remains of several historic sugar-mill sites in the State Parks to create as-builts to be used in preservation and conservation of these resources. The FARO LS 880, along with GPS and total station georeferencing and colour imaging, was used on these projects.
