You are kindly invited to attend the 22ndCIPA Symposium, from 11thto 15thOctober 2009 in Kyoto, Japan. This is an international and interdisciplinary event on recording, documentation, preservation and restoration of cultural heritage applying information and communication technology. The symposium will provide a great opportunity for international researchers and professional practitioners to exchange research results and experience, and enhance forward looking communication and co-operation between north, south, east and west.

The CIPA biannual symposia attract a vast number of interested scientists. The proceedings are published both in ISPRS and ICOMOS ISBN series numbers, in hard copy and digital formats, and attract a great number of citations. Information and on-line proceedings of previous CIPA Symposia are provided at http://cipa.icomos.org/index.php?id=39&PHPSESSID=22ac251388c50c4c2bc4e425982c0ffd

CIPA

The International Committee for Documentation of Cultural Heritage (CIPA: http://cipa.icomos.org/) is one of the oldest international committees belonging to the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), established in collaboration with the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS). Its main purpose is the improvement of all methods used to surveying cultural monuments and sites, especially through synergies gained by combining methods. Of particular consideration here is photogrammetry in all its aspects, as an important contribution to recording and perceptual monitoring of cultural heritage, in preservation and restoration of valuable architectural or other cultural monuments, objects or sites, and in support of architectural, archaeological and other art-historical research.

Symposium Topics

Topics of interest include but are not limited to:- digital recording, documentation and information management of cultural heritage- archaeological and architectural heritage conservation applying ICT- terrestrial/aerial photogrammetry and applications in cultural heritage- terrestrial/aerial laser scanning and applications in cultural heritage- remote sensing and application for cultural heritage- GIS for cultural heritage documentation and applications- intellectual property and open-source relating to cultural heritage- standards/guidelines for documentation of cultural heritage- strategies for long-term archiving of digital information on cultural heritage- preventing risk/hazard to cultural heritage- education, training and communication- 3D-modelling, visualisation, CG animation, VR, MR and web techniques- multi-image and multi-sensor systems.

3D Scanning of Historic Sugar Factories

The Alliance for Integrated Spatial Technologies at the University of South Florida, USA, recently worked with the Florida Park Service on a project to document the remains of several historic sugar-mill sites in the State Parks to create as-builts to be used in preservation and conservation of these resources. The FARO LS 880, along with GPS and total station georeferencing and colour imaging, was used on these projects.
