The FIG Working Week 2009, ‘Surveyors Key Role in Accelerated Development', will be held in Eilat, Israel, from 3rd to 8th May 2009. This will be the third FIG Working Week and General Assembly under the current Council, and the last before FIG Congress in 2010.
New Horizons
The 2009 Working Week is to be hosted jointly by FIG and the Association of Licensed Surveyors in Israel (ALSI). Eilat is a resort city on the Red Sea, hence the conference slogan ‘New Horizons across the Red Sea'. The technical programme will include almost sixty sessions with about three hundred papers. The organisers expect about six hundred participants to attend the conference, exhibition, technical tours and social events.
Building Capacity
The professional themes of the Working Week will focus on the overall theme of the Council, ‘Building the Capacity', including specific topics from the work-plans of all ten technical commissions and their working groups, as well as issues of special interest to local surveyors. The key presentations collected in three plenary sessions will focus on Geo Information Management; Measurement Management; and Emergency and Natural Resource Management.
Regional Conference
The FIG Regional Conference is held every second year and rotates between regions throughout the world. These meetings have been shown to be a successful concept that produces fruitful results both for the region and internationally. Topics for the conference are selected to address issues at the
top of the regional and local agenda, and at the same time form a platform for international discussions.
Serving People
The theme of the 7th FIG regional conference is ‘Spatial Data Serving People: Land Governance and the Environment - Building the Capacity'. The theme will be divided into three sub-themes, so that a plenary session and focus on each day addresses one of these three topics: Land Administration, Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) and the Environment, and Capacity Building.
Sharing Experiences
The conference thus provides an excellent opportunity for FIG member associations and surveyors all over the world to meet and share experiences and achievements under the auspices of hosts FIG and the Vietnam Association of Geodesy, Cartography and Remote Sensing (VGCR). Interestingly, the 7th Regional Conference coincides with Hanoi's thousandth anniversary. The technical tour after conference will take participants to Ha Long Bay to visit the unique archipelago listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
