Theory, Data Handling and Modelling

The Joint International Conference on Theory, Data Handling and Modelling in GeoSpatial Information Science took place in Hong Kong from 26th to 28th May 2010, collating activities of the ISPRS Technical Commission II mid-term symposium, the International Symposium on Spatial Data Handling of IGU Commission on GIS and the International Conference of IGU Commission on Modelling Geographical Systems. The meeting was held at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, in collaboration with The Baptist University, the Chinese Academy of Science and the University of Hong Kong.

GIS From All Sides
The conference gathered together about two hundred participants from 29 countries who attended presentations covering all aspects of GIS, both theoretical (such as spatial modelling, uncertainty modelling, and spatial-data processing algorithms) and applicative (such as LBS, geo-visualisation, land-use studies) and organised in fifteen sessions. Four keynote speeches presenting various aspects of research in GIS were delivered by Michael Goodchild, Deren Li, Daniel Griffith and Anthony Yeh. A total of 109 papers have been published in proceedings in the International Archives of Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences.

Board Meeting
During the conference, Technical Commission II also held its board meeting reviewing the different activities of all working groups and planning further work for the next two years.

Aside from the research activities, participants also got the opportunity to enjoy a Cantonese banquet during the conference gala, with a seafood dinner on a nearby island the next day.

Technical Commission VI Symposium

ISPRS Technical Commission VI on Education and Outreach held a midterm symposium from 2nd to 4th June at the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) in Enschede, The Netherlands, attracting some seventy participants from thirty countries. The symposium went under the title ‘Cross-Border Education for Global Geo-information' and the three-day schedule included ten sessions accommodating about forty papers covering topics such as e-learning methods and tools, web-based education, e-delivery of educational services, cross-border educational programmes, and institutional aspects of cross-border education. Also under the spotlight was the promotion of our profession to young people, and activities and strengthening of the ISPRS Students Consortium.
