| GIM International Interviews Chikai Ohazama of Google Earth |
| Keyhole, the company that founded the technology for Google Earth, developed EarthStream to combine advanced 3D graphics and network-streaming innovations enabling intuitive manipulation of maps. Founded in 2001, the company was acquired by Google on 27th October 2004. In this interview, Keyhole co-founder Chokai Ohazama tells us, “The goals of our technology, compared to a standard like GML, are different.” |

When and how did Google start focusing on GI?

| Biography of Interviewee(s) Chikai Ohazama is product manager of Google Earth. He has been with the product since its inception at Keyhole, where he was co-founder and director of operations. This role has been continued at Google, where he runs the data and server production group that delivers the global high-resolution imagery database and now also oversees the client, as well as other product components. He received his BE from Vanderbilt University and his PhD from Duke University, both in Biomedical Engineering. After graduate school he went on to join Silicon Graphics in 1998 and then left to start Keyhole in 2000. |

3D Scanning of Historic Sugar Factories |
|
The Alliance for Integrated Spatial Technologies at the University of South Florida, USA, recently worked with the Florida Park Service on a project to document the remains of several historic sugar-mill sites in the State Parks to create as-builts to be used in preservation and conservation of these resources. The FARO LS 880, along with GPS and total station georeferencing and colour imaging, was used on these projects.
