| The Eleventh Congress of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) will be held in Beijing, China from 3rd to 11th July 2008 with the theme ‘Silk Road for Information from Imagery’. The ancient Silk Road was a well-known trade route between China and the West and contributed greatly to information exchange and the spreading of scientific knowledge around the world. We now find ourselves in the age of information. How should useful information be provided and shared This is the challenge and it is a hot topic. ISPRS has been devoted to the development of international co-operation for the advancement of photogrammetry, remote sensing and their applications. Through these efforts we can create a new Silk Road for information from imagery, connecting users, scientists, researchers and decisionmakers etc. The ISPRS 2008 Beijing will be a milestone on this new ‘Silk Road for Information from Imagery’. It will include keynote speeches and plenary sessions featuring distinguished scholars, parallel oral and poster sessions presenting the latest developments on many topics, and a user forum showing successful solutions and new user requirements. A trade-fair will showcase state-of-the-art equipment, devices, software and high-resolution images. The General Assembly will elect new council members, technical commission presidents, and determine the host country for the next congress. There will be technical visits, a social programme, sightseeing, and pre and post-congress tours. ISPRS 2008 Beijing will offer a good opportunity for scientists, scholars, researchers, planners, decision-makers and students to exchange information on new technology, applications and innovative ideas, and for research institutes, universities, companies, government agencies, and so on, to present products, services and activities. As congress director I am confident of witnessing an Informative, Special, People-centred, Rewarding and Successful (ISPRS) Congress. I cordially invite you to the ISPRS 2008 Beijing and I look forward to your participation.
