Modern Aerial Imagery of Belfast

  16/10/2006

The GeoInformation Group (United Kingdom), publishers of Cities Revealed aerial photography, has captured aerial imagery of Belfast at 12.5cm resolution. This high-resolution aerial imagery dataset was captured on 16th September 2006 and is the most current aerial imagery available of Belfast, at this resolution.

Belfast City Council, Northdown Council and Carrick Fergus Council amongst other clients commissioned The GeoInformation Group to capture the dataset, which covers approximately 500 square kilometres of the Northern Ireland capital and surrounding area. Belfast is currently undergoing a major regeneration programme particularly the high profile Titanic Quarter, a 185 acre site that represents one of the largest waterfront developments in Europe; Laganside, the city’s waterfront and old docks area; and North Foreshore a 340 acre area of reclaimed land to the north of the city centre. These areas are included in the Cities Revealed aerial survey of Belfast and it is anticipated that the aerial imagery will be used extensively in the regeneration programme.

3D Scanning of Historic Sugar Factories

The Alliance for Integrated Spatial Technologies at the University of South Florida, USA, recently worked with the Florida Park Service on a project to document the remains of several historic sugar-mill sites in the State Parks to create as-builts to be used in preservation and conservation of these resources. The FARO LS 880, along with GPS and total station georeferencing and colour imaging, was used on these projects.
