3D Laser Mapping Launches MineMapper

  03/12/2007
3D Laser Mapping (United Kingdom) has developed a mining industry version of its StreetMapper system. MineMapper uses the latest mobile laser scanning technology combined with high precision positioning systems to capture highly accurate and detailed measurements on the move.

MineMapper is suited for the mining environment as the system can be deployed on a range of vehicles to suit all terrains. When combined with 3D Laser Mapping's SiteMonitor software it can automatically create detailed 3D models of the mining operation including highly accurate depletion surveys, slope stability models, stockpile measurements and mine wide terrain map updates.

MineMapper comprises a series of vehicle-mounted laser scanning units together with an on-board positioning system that uses satellite technology and an INS navigation system. Each scanner transmits an optical pulse from a known position and at a known direction and angle and records the time taken for the beam to be ‘bounced' back to the receiving unit. The speed of light is then used to calculate the exact position of the feature from the laser unit.

The MineMapper laser survey system can capture up to 40,000 measurements per second with a typical accuracy of 3-5cm, while on the move. Multiple scanners provide a wide field of view maximising the data capture operation, minimising disruption to the mining operation and reducing risk to personnel and equipment. MineMapper is easy to operate and can be mounted on virtually any type of vehicle including, off road 4x4, quad bike or boat. Unlike traditional airborne survey systems MineMapper is not restricted by weather conditions, is easy to use and offers significant cost savings.

Using Total Stations for Indoor Radiation Mapping

A total station can be used for many applications. Oak Ridge Associated Universities (USA) uses a total station for indoor radiation characterisation, which enables the team to better perform environmental assessments. This video shows how it is done.
