Latvian Forest Service to Replace Compass and Measuring Tape12/08/2008 |
| The Latvian State Forest Service (SFS) has purchased 124 Magellan MobileMapper CX handheld GPS/GIS units. SFS foresters will use the new units to locate forest and timber cutting boundaries. The MobileMapper CXs will run ESRI ArcPad 7.1, localised (Latvian) version mobile GIS and field mapping software and be loaded with the state forest service and orthophoto background maps. |

The units were purchased from Magellan distributor SIA Envirotech, which is headquartered in Riga. SIA Envirotech is the leading company in Latvia supplying GIS/GPS technologies and implementing spatially enabled IT solutions.
The SFS is a state administration civil institution, within the Latvia Ministry of Agriculture, responsible for pursuing a unified forest policy, controlling observance of the provisions of statutory acts, implementing support programs, and ensuring the use of sustainable forest management practices in all of Latvia's forests.

3D Scanning of Historic Sugar Factories |

The Alliance for Integrated Spatial Technologies at the University of South Florida, USA, recently worked with the Florida Park Service on a project to document the remains of several historic sugar-mill sites in the State Parks to create as-builts to be used in preservation and conservation of these resources. The FARO LS 880, along with GPS and total station georeferencing and colour imaging, was used on these projects.

SFS chose the MobileMapper CX for its convenience, simplicity and combination GPS receiver and GIS data collector in a single unit. Since the units would be used by field foresters skilled in analog cartography and surveying methods, it was important that the new digital equipment be easy-to-use. SFS considered buying separate pocket PC and GPS devices connected by Bluetooth, but the rugged all-in-one quality of the MobileMapper CX was significantly more appealing.
