Space Methods for Environment Protection

  14/09/2009
Representatives of BP and Shell as well as those of the environmental organizations WWF Russia and Greenpeace formed part of the "Nature Protection" Section of the Organising Committee at The 4th International Conference "Earth from Space - The Most Effective Solutions". On 2nd December 2009, "Nature Protection" section attendees are to discuss various aspects of using satellite methods for solving issues related to environmental condition monitoring and control on the basis of reliable and up-to-date space information applying an essentially different approach to the issues of the man-nature interaction.

The membership of the Conference Organising Committee included representatives of the most influential environmental organisations, Greenpeace and WWF, which are widely known for their efforts in the areas of preserving biodiversity, preventing pollution and taking countermeasures against climate changes. At the same time the Section Organising Committee also includes Shell and BP.

Satellite monitoring allows in deed and not in name ensuring environmental transparency of business.

Primary areas of the Section's activity:

  • protection and efficient management of protected natural areas;

  • improvements of forestry performance, detection of illegal cuttings;

  • protection of wildlife, in particular that of species being in danger of extinction;

  • enhancement of environmental and social indicators in implementation of large national infrastructural projects (Sochi-2014 Olympic Games, construction of facilities for APEC-2012 summit);

  • monitoring and control of compliance with nature management terms in different industries;

  • impact assessment in event of emergencies and development of impact mitigation actions, etc.

The Conference "Earth from Space - the Most Effective Solutions" will cover the entire range of issues dedicated to thematic application of satellite data as well as to technologies of their acquisition and processing. Taking into account modern life peculiarities and trends the four primary topics were defined for the conference: application of space information technology for region management in the conditions of global economic recession; nature protection monitoring; Internet services and geoportals development trends using versatile spatial information; integration of science, education and business.

The Conference is to take place from 1st to 3rd December2009 in "Vatutinki" complex of RF President Administration in Moscow Region. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of ScanEx, one of the initiators of the conferene, the program includes master classes for satellite imagery operators, exhibition of latest achievements in the field of Earth remote sensing, conference of ScanEx users, technical tour in the company office, free training courses on space images processing, etc. Admission information is posted on the event website.

3D Scanning of Historic Sugar Factories

The Alliance for Integrated Spatial Technologies at the University of South Florida, USA, recently worked with the Florida Park Service on a project to document the remains of several historic sugar-mill sites in the State Parks to create as-builts to be used in preservation and conservation of these resources. The FARO LS 880, along with GPS and total station georeferencing and colour imaging, was used on these projects.
