Blue Marble Volunteers at Local Schools for GIS Day

Blue Marble has volunteered to present a GIS discussion to three high schools in the Augusta Maine region to promote geographic awareness in Maine. GIS Day provides an international forum for users of GIS technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in society. More than 80 countries will participate in local events. Blue Marble will lead an open discussion with the students on how GIS is a part of their everyday lives. The presentation will include a classroom exercise in which students will apply GIS tools and analysis to the question of where to construct a hypothetical wind farm in a given Maine location, taking into account the interests of local residents and environmental impact.

"It has long been a goal of Blue Marble Geographics to contribute to our local community and we see GIS Day as a great way to do that," stated Blue Marble President Patrick Cunningham. "Maine has a rich history in surveying and mapping and today's students should learn more about that connection. We feel we have an obligation to our local students to share what we can about GIS as it is a great scientific tool and even potential career option for them."
