GEO-10 Supports Emergency Mapping Charity

  09/02/2010
The organisers of GEO-10 are putting together a fundraiser for MapAction, the charity that provides field mapping for disaster emergencies. As part of a recently announced programme of events the fund raising activity will take place at a Las Vegas style gala evening and will feature prizes donated by companies exhibiting at the event.

GEO-10 takes place on the 24th and 25th March 2010 at the Ricoh Arena Coventry, UK, and combines a full two days of conference with the UK's only dedicated national geospatial trade exhibition, a packed programme of free, show floor seminars, live product demos and of course great networking opportunities.

"As the main event for the UK geomatics industry we felt we had a great opportunity to raise the profile of MapAction and generate much needed funds following the Haitian earthquake," commented Stephen Booth of PV Publications, organisers of the event. "Obviously mapping is very close to the hearts of everyone associated with GEO-10. Whether they are visitors, delegates, exhibitors, speakers or members of the organising team we all understand the importance of good mapping especially in emergencies where it is essential to help target aid and supplies to relieve suffering."

MapAction is the only non-government organisation with a track record of supporting humanitarian aid projects by delivering vital information in the form of maps created from data gathered at the disaster scene. MapAction has a substantial track record and since 2004 has helped in twenty emergencies including the Asian tsunami, volcanoes, floods and tropical storms and more recently the earthquake in Haiti. MapAction is generously supported by a number of organisations including ESRI (UK), the Association for Geographic Information (AGI) and Ordnance Survey - who are all expected to attend GEO-10.

GEO-10 is designed for everyone involved in the construction, civil engineering, development, local / national government agencies, professional survey practice and consultancy. With exhibitors demonstrating the latest technology and developments in the fields of Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning and Navigation systems, laser scanning, rapid mobile data capture systems, data modelling and analysis and mapping together with leading trade organisations and academic institutions, GEO-10 is a must attend.

3D Scanning of Historic Sugar Factories

The Alliance for Integrated Spatial Technologies at the University of South Florida, USA, recently worked with the Florida Park Service on a project to document the remains of several historic sugar-mill sites in the State Parks to create as-builts to be used in preservation and conservation of these resources. The FARO LS 880, along with GPS and total station georeferencing and colour imaging, was used on these projects.
