Smart Grid and Utility GIS-Based Solutions

  10/02/2010
When electric cooperative professionals convene this week for TechAdvantage 2010, ESRI will present smart grid implementation strategies and other utility solutions based on geographic information system (GIS) technology.

The TechAdvantage 2010 Conference and Expo is scheduled for 10th to 15th February 2010, in Atlanta, Georgia. Visit ESRI at booth number 725 to see demos and discuss the use of GIS for mapping, asset and outage management, and field crew automation.

Utilities are also invited to join ESRI staff for two presentations:
• Is Your GIS Smart Grid Ready?-Learn what it means to be smart grid ready and how GIS can help. Participants will also be able to fill out a self-assessment and discuss best practices to ensure smart grid readiness. Saturday, February 13, 9:15 a.m.-10:15 a.m. in Learning Lab 5.
• Leveraging Geography to Drive Business Value-Learn how GIS solutions provide a single, integrated system for data management, planning and analysis, mobile workforce optimization, and operational awareness. Saturday, February 13, 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m., in room C203.

"As the TechAdvantage show grows in size and scope, ESRI is excited to be part of it," said Bill Meehan, ESRI's director of utility solutions. "Electric cooperatives face the challenge of keeping cost low and service quality high, and we appreciate the opportunity to discuss practical, applicable GIS solutions."

3D Scanning of Historic Sugar Factories

The Alliance for Integrated Spatial Technologies at the University of South Florida, USA, recently worked with the Florida Park Service on a project to document the remains of several historic sugar-mill sites in the State Parks to create as-builts to be used in preservation and conservation of these resources. The FARO LS 880, along with GPS and total station georeferencing and colour imaging, was used on these projects.
