American Transmission Improves Response Time

  05/03/2010
As the owner and operator of the high-voltage electric transmission grid serving a four-state area, American Transmission Co. (ATC) needs to quickly dispatch field crews to the exact locations of power-flow disruptions to minimize outage times and help keep the lights on for homes and businesses. The company accomplishes this by viewing utility data, Bing Maps, and weather in one interactive, company-wide map, using server-based geographic information system (GIS) technology from ESRI.

"The simple-to-use, GIS-based Web application helps system operators quickly deploy restoration or maintenance crews to the exact fault location, resulting in shorter response time and, ultimately, minimizing unplanned restoration outages," says Eric Fowler, asset applications development lead with ATC. "With GIS technology, ATC operators are able to manage the system with real-time information and link directly to our asset information."

3D Scanning of Historic Sugar Factories

The Alliance for Integrated Spatial Technologies at the University of South Florida, USA, recently worked with the Florida Park Service on a project to document the remains of several historic sugar-mill sites in the State Parks to create as-builts to be used in preservation and conservation of these resources. The FARO LS 880, along with GPS and total station georeferencing and colour imaging, was used on these projects.
