| Southern Mapping Company (SMC) staff started with Airborne Lidar (Light Detection and ranging) in the early 90's, using helicopters as airborne platforms for the technology. Later, both helicopters and fixed wing aircraft were used and most recently only fixed wing aircraft. SMC chief executive Peter Moir conducted all the test flying together with the South African Civil Aviation authority to have the Lidar equipment and airborne cameras approved for flying. |

The Alliance for Integrated Spatial Technologies at the University of South Florida, USA, recently worked with the Florida Park Service on a project to document the remains of several historic sugar-mill sites in the State Parks to create as-builts to be used in preservation and conservation of these resources. The FARO LS 880, along with GPS and total station georeferencing and colour imaging, was used on these projects.
