Fire Situation Around Moscow19/07/2010 |
| With abnormally hot weather, fire hazard conditions have aggravated over the European part of Russia. On the territory of Moscow Region, according to official data as of 12th July, the Emercom of Russia forces responded to 24 natural fires: 20 peat fires and 4 forest fires. Earlier, on tenth July, the Emercom's amphibian aircraft Be-200 was used to put out the Shatura peat fires. This aircraft dropped 6 tons of water on the fire spots. |
Nevertheless, according to the satellite-based monitoring data the thermal spots are regularly detected in Shatura and Orekhovo-Zuyevo Districts, as well as in the neighbouring Vladimir and Yaroslavl Regions. On 12th July, a new fire in Yaroslavl Region was registered based on the satellite data near the town of Pereslavl-Zalessky, which smoke is transferred by the north-eastern wind towards Dmitrov.
A fire in Lyskovsky District of Nizhny Novgorov Region has also been registered. Due to heavy clouds MODIS sensors of Terra and Aqua satellites failed to detect thermal anomalies in this region, however the middle-resolution images of Landsat-5 clearly show the fire site and the smoke plume.
One may track the fire situation on the European part of Russia using SFMS operational monitoring service, which ensures a free access to daily MODIS scanner imagery results from Terra and Aqua satellites. Further assessment of burnt areas is done using detailed SPOT 4 and Landsat-5 images, which quicklooks are also available on SFMS service.

3D Scanning of Historic Sugar Factories |

The Alliance for Integrated Spatial Technologies at the University of South Florida, USA, recently worked with the Florida Park Service on a project to document the remains of several historic sugar-mill sites in the State Parks to create as-builts to be used in preservation and conservation of these resources. The FARO LS 880, along with GPS and total station georeferencing and colour imaging, was used on these projects.
