Tutorial on Inertial and Satellite-based Navigation

  08/12/2010
The Institute of Navigation (ION) is announcing a new online tutorial on inertial and satellite-based navigation designed to be a refresher course for professionals in positioning, navigation and timing and for new engineering professionals entering the field. The tutorial, presented by Dr. James L. Farrell is part of ION's ongoing commitment to support the advancement of the art and science of positioning, navigation and timing.

Presented in two parts, the Inertial and Satellite Based Navigation tutorial is an hour and a half fundamentals course for those wanting insight into these two widely used means of navigation. "As older navigation experts move into retirement, it's important that we capture that brain trust and share it with other professionals in the field," said Lisa Beaty, ION Executive Director. "It's critical too, that we continue to attract young engineers into the field, and provide them with the important fundaments" Beaty added.

Dr. Farrell, an Institute of Navigation Fellow, is a leading authority on GPS/inertial integration, calibration, and integrity and the author of Integrated Aircraft Navigation and GNSS Aided Navigation And Tracking and has written more than 80 technical journal and conference manuscripts.

The tutorial is being offered free to ION members and is also available for non-members for USD50.

Using Total Stations for Indoor Radiation Mapping

A total station can be used for many applications. Oak Ridge Associated Universities (USA) uses a total station for indoor radiation characterisation, which enables the team to better perform environmental assessments. This video shows how it is done.
