American Airspace Open to Commercial UAVs

  16/02/2012
A bill recently passed by Congress will require the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to open US airspace to drone (UAV) flights in four years. Currently, the FAA restricts drone use to segregated blocks of temporarily or permanently restricted airspace for border patrol and other government tasks. The FAA prohibits profit-making flights by any sort of unmanned aircraft through rules; the law is silent on that point.

Pressure has been building for the past few years to remove the lid from commercial and law enforcement unmanned aircraft traffic, opening the market to a huge potential expansion of drones, missions and payloads. The FAA resisted that pressure by issuing very restrictive rules and delaying work on changes. Now, the FAA has nine months to submit a plan on how to safely provide drones with essentially the same access to US airspace as is seen today in general aviation.

Market Info Group has researched and analysed the revolution that is expected to follow this opening of American (and probably also European) airspace to unmanned aircraft.

The UAV Series presents a unique, multi-scenario group of forecasts, covering the changes, challenges and opportunities inherent to this relatively new unmanned systems market. Collectively, MiG forecasts cover government and business markets in the air, on land and at sea. In every report, you will find reasoned forecasts, with focus on new business opportunities.

Using Total Stations for Indoor Radiation Mapping

A total station can be used for many applications. Oak Ridge Associated Universities (USA) uses a total station for indoor radiation characterisation, which enables the team to better perform environmental assessments. This video shows how it is done.
