GNSS Receivers, October 2009

By Henk Key, contributing editor, GIM International

In this survey we are looking for complete instruments suitable for direct use in the terrain, but again some manufacturers like Serpentrio, Novatel, Fosberg and Navcom supplied information about OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) products. Having had a closer look at these products, I must admit perhaps we are on the wrong track. For example, take one of these OEM products, mount it on a car, connect it to an onboard computer, and with suitable software you have a complete system supplying accurate positional information. And that's what we're looking for...Should we not reconsider the intention behind our survey and add information concerning these products? Or even restrict the survey to the actual receiver component (antenna and GNSS board)? I look forward to hearing your own views on the subject.

Please feel free to send me any comments or suggestions you may have to help us improve this Product Survey. Your opinion is important to me. You also can take the opportunity to write your experience about the instruments below the characteristics of each instrument, once you have selected one.

3D Scanning of Historic Sugar Factories

The Alliance for Integrated Spatial Technologies at the University of South Florida, USA, recently worked with the Florida Park Service on a project to document the remains of several historic sugar-mill sites in the State Parks to create as-builts to be used in preservation and conservation of these resources. The FARO LS 880, along with GPS and total station georeferencing and colour imaging, was used on these projects.
