GPS & GIS Technologies Speed Assessment of Historic Sites in Post-Katrina New Orleans

Organisation: Trimble Navigation Ltd
In 2005, Hurricane Katrina damaged tens of thousands of historic homes throughout the city of New Orleans. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and National Park Service (NPS) collaborated on field assessment methodology to meet the NHPA requirements. Trimble GPS hardware and software was integrated with ESRI ArcGIS for collection and management of cultural resource data with more than 40,000 structures assessed in a fraction of the time required by traditional data collection methods.

3D Scanning of Historic Sugar Factories

The Alliance for Integrated Spatial Technologies at the University of South Florida, USA, recently worked with the Florida Park Service on a project to document the remains of several historic sugar-mill sites in the State Parks to create as-builts to be used in preservation and conservation of these resources. The FARO LS 880, along with GPS and total station georeferencing and colour imaging, was used on these projects.
