5 Questions to Christiane Salbach

As the geospatial industry undergoes rapid transformation, this year’s Intergeo, taking place from 24-26 September in Stuttgart, is set to spotlight the most critical trends driving the field forward. Christiane Salbach, managing director of DVW GmbH, offers her perspective on how Intergeo is meeting the evolving needs of the industry, encouraging impactful collaborations and equipping the next generation of professionals to tackle future challenges.

Which key geospatial trends and technological innovations are expected to take centre stage at this year’s event?

This year’s Intergeo will highlight several groundbreaking trends. Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing geospatial data analysis by identifying patterns and anomalies faster than ever before. Cloud solutions provide flexible access to extensive databases and computing power, simplifying the processing of large datasets. Additionally, enhanced graphics processors are advancing the visualization and modelling of complex geospatial data. These technologies are essential for tackling global challenges such as the climate crisis, sustainable planning and construction, and urbanization. Particularly exciting is the integration of new sensors and technologies, which enable even more detailed environmental data collection.

How is Intergeo contributing to addressing the planet’s most pressing challenges?

Intergeo traditionally positions itself as a global platform for all geospatial applications. The collection, analysis and visualization of Earth observation data are increasingly crucial for monitoring climate change and securing resources. By bringing together experts from various disciplines and regions, the event promotes knowledge exchange and the development of innovative solutions. Workshops, panel discussions and specialized forums enable participants to initiate groundbreaking practical geospatial collaborations and build networks that extend beyond the event. The focus this year is on projects that advance the use of geospatial data for disaster preparedness and environmental protection. Additionally, knowledge transfer within Germany’s federal surveying administrations empowers experts to develop sustainable solutions and forge forward-looking partnerships.

How are you ensuring that Intergeo best supports the evolving needs of the industry?

The Intergeo agenda is continuously adapted to the evolving needs of the geospatial industry by focusing on current topics and technologies. This includes giving significant attention to new trends like AI, cloud computing and the latest visualization technologies, along with their applications, both in the conference programme and on the Expo stages. Participant and exhibitor feedback is systematically evaluated to continually improve the offerings. The event also employs flexible formats, allowing attendees to tailor their learning and networking experiences. Through this dynamic approach, Intergeo remains a relevant hub for the industry.

How will the event address the educational needs of the next generation of geospatial professionals?

At Intergeo, we place strong emphasis on fostering the next generation of geospatial professionals. New technologies and their applications are showcased to prepare young professionals for future challenges. The integration of educational partners and universities into the event also supports the exchange between academia and industry. Through targeted initiatives like the Intergeo School Day, when groups are taken on guided tours of the event, we provide students with easy access to the world of geoinformation. Young talents receive age-appropriate demonstrations and can gain their first hands-on experiences through interactive demos.

How do you envisage Intergeo having an even bigger impact in the future?

A key wish for the future of Intergeo is to contribute to greater recognition of geospatial data in politics and society. Intergeo focuses on the collection and diverse applications of geospatial data, which is crucial for property security, internal security and protecting critical infrastructure. Beyond these areas, Earth observation data, especially when combined with AI, can be a game-changer for agriculture, global food security and addressing climate-induced changes in urban and rural areas. Geospatial data forms the foundation for understanding and efficiently managing our environment and resources. With stronger collaboration between politics, business and society, Intergeo could play an even greater role in developing and implementing innovative solutions to the most pressing challenges of our time.
