The ISPRS Commission I Symposium took place at Calgary Convention centre from 15th to 18th June, in parallel with the first Canadian Geomatics Conference the theme of which was: Convergence in Geomatics - Shaping Canada's Competitive Landscape. The opening ceremony included an address by Professor Orhan Altan, ISPRS president. Plenary speeches were given by Glen Hodgson, vice-president and senior economist of the Conference Board of Canada, and Jim Garinger, former Governor of the State of Wyoming. A keynote was also delivered by Deputy Premier the Honourable Doug Horner, also Minister of Advanced Education and Technology. The ISPRS plenary session took place on 16th June, with two speeches by respectively Professor Orhan Altan and Dr. Geoff Zeiss, director of technology with Enterprise Solutions Architecture, Autodesk, Inc.

The programme attracted 400 attendees. There were 175 oral presentations, 32 exhibitors, twenty demos, and fifty poster sessions. Topics covered included the state of the art and future trends in imaging and mapping sensors and platforms and available and future remote-sensing data from airborne and space instruments onboard various platforms. Also addressed was the strategic importance of geomatics to Canada's future, and how specific scientific and industry developments and applications could enhance the country's socioeconomic wellbeing. Overall participant feedback is most positive.

ISPRS Technical Commission V Symposium

ISPRS Technical Commission V held its mid-term Symposium entitled ‘Close-range Image Measurement Techniques' in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, from 21st to 24th June 2010. With the 2010 football World Cup in full-swing, the choice of St. James' Park (home to Newcastle United FC) as venue for the symposium proved popular: over 230 participants from 29 nations attended.
A total of 116 full papers were submitted to the International Archives, which, in addition to keynote, invited and sponsor addresses, saw 125 oral and poster presentations made throughout the technical programme. Pre-symposium tutorials proved extremely popular, and more than fifty delegates attended the ‘Heritage 3D' and ‘Close-range sensors' one-day events. Sixteen exhibitors demonstrated their products throughout the symposium.

Socially, the symposium was opened by the Lord Mayor of Newcastle at a drinks reception in Newcastle Civic Centre. The Student Consortium hosted a barbecue for more than sixty students in a Newcastle University garden. The conference dinner was held at Newcastle's flagship Great North Museum, the Hancock, recently refurbished at a cost of £26M and opened by Her Majesty the Queen in October 2009.

Further details of the event are available on the Symposium website 1.
