Geomatics Still Incipient in Latin America

Santiago Borrero has been Secretary General of the Pan-American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH) since 2003. Here, he shares his views on the current state of geomatics – and in particular of cadastres – in Latin America, including best practices, his interest in INSPIRE and the impact of the UN-GGIM initiative, as well as his expectations for future growth.

As secretary general of the Pan-American Institute of Geography and History, can you tell us more about its work?

Established in 1928 and based in Mexico City, PAIGH is a unique intergovernmental organisation in the Americas. It combines space and time with geography and history. With the spatial component, PAIGH contributes to the Inter-American System co-ordinated by the Organization of American States (OAS). Annual quotas paid by the State members form the basis of PAIGH´s budget. As our resources are limited, innovation and relevance are the keywords when determining priorities for our operations. At the regional level, PAIGH liaises with the leading international geospatial organisations such as ISPRS, ISO TC/211 or GSDI.
