Data Acquisition and Processing Systems for ALOS

Vexcel Corporation (Canada) has taken the lead in providing data acquisition and processing systems for the Japanese Advanced Land Observation Satellite (ALOS) launched 23 January of this year. In preparation of this landmark event, Vexcel has developed ALOS ground systems and processing solutions for organisations wishing to leverage the benefits of the spacecraft's onboard instruments: the Panchromatic Remote-sensing Instrument of Stereo Mapping (PRISM), the Advanced Visible and Near Infrared Radiometer-2 (AVNIR-2) and Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) sensors.

PALSAR is designed to allow day-and-night observations and is capable of producing imagery up to ten-metres in resolution. The sensor includes a ScanSAR mode to allow for observation of scenes up to 350km in width and a multi-polarimetric mode to facilitate classification of ground characteristics.
