EU and Korean GNSS Community Discusses Cooperation

The European GNSS Agency (GSA) recently joined key EU and Korean GNSS players from industry and government in Seoul for the 2014 GNSS.asia Korean Industrial Seminar. The seminar, which was held in partnership with the Korean National Geographic Information Institute, the Korean GNSS Society and the Korean Spatial Information Society, was an opportunity for industry experts to assess current opportunities for GNSS downstream cooperation and present up-to-date market information on various application domains.

In her keynote address, Justyna Redelkiewicz, market development officer of the GSA, noted that the Location Based Services (LBS) segment has seen considerable growth recently – a trend that is expected to continue with the increasing use of smartphones. Location Based Services are a perfect fit with the contemporary fast pace of life, especially in large cities, she said. This, combined with the increased affordability of smartphones and other GNSS-enabled platforms, will drive the future growth of the LBS market, which is forecasted to be 10 percent CAGR over the next decade.

Smartphones

With smartphones comprising 90 percent of all LBS devices sold and the increasing penetration of tablets and digital cameras with GNSS usage, Justyna said this is a sector ripe with opportunities for cooperation between Korea and the EU. She also noted that this is one of several sectors of interest to the Horizon 2020, the new EU Framework Program for Research and Innovation. In particular to GNSS.asia, Horizon 2020’s Galileo-3 is geared towards the development of E-GNSS applications within the international context and related standards with a high international impact.

The event also included numerous presentations from dedicated pilot projects demonstrating successful bilateral industrial cooperation supported by the GNSS.asia team. One highlight was the presentation of the multi-GNSS High Precision Receiver developments made jointly by Korean SME Ascen Korea and Fraunhofer, Europe’s largest application-oriented research organisation.

In addition, members of the GNSS.asia team had the opportunity to see GNSS innovation first hand with visits to the ETRI’s Daejeon GNSS research center and the Samsung Digital City in Suwon.

New Chances

The Korean government’s recent announcement regarding the development and implantation of an independent Korean SBAS raises many exciting opportunities, especially for European companies and experts specializing in EGNOS. GNSS.asia confirmed its commitment to supporting European industry looking to enter the Korean market.

An upcoming opportunity is a Korea GNSS.asia-organised briefing on the European e-call regulation. The briefing will take place 28 May in Seoul from 10:00 – 12:00. The event is being co-organised by the GSA and the European Chamber of Commerce in Korea. Companies interested in attending should register via korea.gnss.asia or by emailing korea@gnss.asia.

GNSS.asia is dedicated to promoting and facilitating industrial cooperation between European partners and Asian economies in the downstream sector. GNSS.asia features experts from European Chambers of Commerce in South Korea, Japan, India, China and Taiwan. Upcoming seminars are schedule for China (27 May), Tokyo (29 May) and in conjunction with the European Space Solutions Conference in Prague (12 June).
