3D mapping lays groundwork for Lerkendal Stadion upgrade

On behalf of Norwegian football club Rosenborg BK, the geospatial technology company Field has taken an active role in supporting the future development of Lerkendal Stadion through a comprehensive 3D scanning and mapping programme. The work resulted in a complete point cloud and a detailed digital twin of the iconic venue, creating a solid digital foundation for the next phase of planning and redevelopment.

Plans to expand Lerkendal Stadion received approval from Trondheim City Council in late 2025, with the project expected to require a substantial investment. Field contributed to the planning process across several stages, providing high-quality spatial data to support design and decision-making.

The collaboration began with a full 3D scan of the stadium during preparations for the replacement of the lighting system. To ensure both accuracy and efficiency, the team combined drone-based data capture with two complementary laser scanning technologies: the Leica RTC360 and the NavVis VLX. This approach delivered detailed and reliable datasets, including in complex and hard-to-reach areas such as the roof structures.

Extending the digital foundation beyond the stadium

In parallel, the wider development plans include a new building to the east of the stadium, covering a total area of roughly 27,450 square metres. The majority of this space will be allocated to offices, industry, services, hospitality and retail functions, creating a mixed-use environment connected to the stadium.

The proposed building will rise to several storeys facing the stadium, with multiple basement levels incorporated into the design. Field supported this phase with detailed scanning of both the grandstand and the adjacent outdoor areas to the east. Once again, a combination of scanning technologies and drone operations was deployed to establish a comprehensive and dependable data baseline for the project’s continued development.
