95% of rural India’s land records now digitized

In a landmark achievement, nearly 95% of rural India’s land records have been digitized, revolutionizing the management of land ownership and transforming the lives of millions. This monumental step, part of the Digital India Land Records Modernization Programme (DILRMP), marks a significant leap towards transparency, efficiency and empowerment in rural land administration.

The digitization of land records is a game-changer for rural India, tackling historical issues like complex paperwork, ownership disputes and fraudulent transactions. Union Minister of Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, recently highlighted the importance of this progress, noting how digital records simplify land management and reduce court burdens by streamlining dispute resolution.

Empowering communities through technology

With ownership information now readily accessible online, rural households are experiencing unprecedented ease and security in land transactions. Marginalized communities, in particular, benefit from this shift, gaining stronger access to land rights. The integration of geospatial mapping enhances the accuracy of surveys, aiding in disaster response and fair compensation during land acquisitions.

Launched in 2016, DILRMP is fully funded by the central government and aims to create a unified, real-time land information system. By digitizing 95% of land records and 68.02% of cadastral maps, and integrating 87% of sub-registrar offices with land records, the programme is building a more organized, transparent and accessible land governance system.

This transformation is laying the groundwork for a more equitable society. Making land records clear and accessible enables rural communities to confidently claim their land rights, fostering economic growth and stability. This milestone not only strengthens rural land governance but also ensures that every individual can actively participate in the nation’s progress.
