Christian Heipke Nominated for ISPRS SG Position

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photogrammetrie, Fernerkundung und Geoinformation (DGPF, Germany) has applied for the position of Secretary General of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) 2012 to 2016. The organisation nominates Christian Heipke for this position, supported by the former president, Cornelia Gläßer.

Gottfried Konecny was Council member 20 years ago, nominated by the DGPF, last serving as First Vice President from 1988 – 1992.

Since 1998 Christian Heipke holds a professorship of photogrammetry and remote sensing and is head of IPI, the Institute of Photogrammetry and GeoInformation at Leibniz Universität Hannover as successor of Gottfried Konecny. From 2009 - 2011 Christian served as Dean of Civil Engineering and Geodetic Science and in this position was a member of the President’s council of Leibniz Universität.

Besides his university duties Christian has held leading positions of trust in national and international scientific organisations: vice president of EuroSDR from 2004 to 2009 and 2010, he is chair of DGK, the German Geodetic Commission.

Within ISPRS Mr Heipke has an active history covering more than 20 years. In 1988 he was appointed working group secretary, moving to the position of Commission III secretary in 1992. Since 1996 he has been Chair of various working groups in different commissions. He was also a member of the ISPRS Strategy Team which prepared the new ISPRS strategic plan adopted in Vienna in 2010. Since 1999 he is the convenor of the ISPRS Hannover Workshop on "High-resolution Earth Imaging for Geospatial Information", which gathers a crowd of about 100 international scientists in Hannover every two years.

Christian was the recipient of the 1992 Otto von Gruber Award from ISPRS and has received the President's citation three times in a row for successful leadership of an ISPRS working group.
