Conference on Application of Remote Sensing Data

The 'APEC Network Building - Applied Space Technology Centres' conference is to take place in Vladivostok, Russia, on 16 and 17 October 2012. The conference will focus on applications of remote sensing data in sustainable forestry and Reduction Emission Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+) projects, facilitation of financial investments in the related bilateral and multilateral projects in the APEC (Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation) region.

The conference aims to facilitate a network cooperation among R&D centres which apply satellite technologies; transformation of successful pilot projects in remote sensing sector into full-scale projects; attraction of financial investments in development of projects and technologies in the areas of natural resource conservation, climate change and green growth.

Thematic workgroups will consider applications of remote sensing in sustainable fisheries, preparedness to natural disasters and development of new projects like Blue Carbon.

The conference participants will include leading experts in applied satellite-based technologies from Russia and APEC who work in governmental and public organisations, universities and research institutions, air and space agencies (Roscosmos, CSA, NOAA, NASA, CONAE, JAXA, CNSA, ESA), and companies-satellite operators (Digital Globe, GeoEye, MDA, SPOT Image, UK DMC).

A conference resolution will summarise the conference results. This document will contain recommendations for development of innovative centres which utilise remote sensing data in APEC countries, with special focus on network cooperation among such centres. This resolution shall be communicated to all interested organisations according to APEC rules.

The Vladivostok conference is the next step in joint project implementation between Roscosmos and Scanex R&D in the APEC region.  Last year, Scanex R&D in cooperation with Roscosmos and Ministry of Economic Development organised a conference called 'Application of remote sensing data in sustainable fisheries' in Indonesia. This event was supported by Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (Republic of Indonesia) and APEC Secretariat, and attended by representatives of eight APEC countries: Vietnam, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Russia, USA, Thailand and Taiwan.

This conference is organised by the APEC secretariat, Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) and ScanEx RDC, supported by the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) and Far Eastern Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences (FEB RAS).
