Counting Down to Intergeo 2022

Preparations for Intergeo 2022, the world’s leading conference and trade fair for the geodesy, geoinformation and land management community, are in full swing. This year’s event, featuring three full days of personal meetings and knowledge transfer, will take place in Essen, Germany, from 18-20 October. Around 400 international companies will be present, ranging from innovative young start-ups to key players from around the world. Intergeo is back for its 28th edition!

This promises to be a very special edition of Intergeo, not least because it will be the first time many professionals have been able to attend the event in real life since the start of the worldwide coronavirus pandemic. Many of the exhibiting companies are eager to show visitors how they are currently implementing reality capture: recording reality in real time using advanced lasers or scanners equipped with high-end sensors, resulting in point clouds and other forms of geospatial data output – whether from the air, from the ground or on the water.

The World is Geospatial

Geospatial data makes the world digitally available in three dimensions. This enables a multitude of innovative applications and technological trends, such as reality capturing, positioning technologies, machine learning, planning and construction, smart cities, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or ‘drones’) and smart surveying. These will all be key ingredients at this year’s Intergeo.

The themes of digital twins and building information modelling (BIM) in construction will play a central role at the 28th edition of the world’s most prominent gathering of geospatial professionals, especially in the context of smart planning & construction and smart cities. Simulations are essential for predictions and scenario modelling in the event of a disaster, and a wide range of departments require rapid access to the latest geodata. Meanwhile, in the field of mobility (including autonomous driving), digital twins serve as both a basis and a permanent source of information.

In addition, Intergeo will highlight current developments in surveying based around the theme of ‘Inspiration for a smarter world’: from spatial reference and positioning to 4D geodata, and from geospatial IoT to mobile mapping applications. Earth observation data collected via satellites is also becoming increasingly important due to climate change.

Intergeo 2022 Returns to Pre-pandemic Dimensions

Daniel Katzer, Intergeo project manager at Hinte, the company that is organizing the fair, is confident: “The preparations are going very well. In our contact with the exhibitors and visitors, we sense very clearly that there is a strong need for exchange within the framework of Intergeo. As a result, we are receiving a lot of bookings from both national and international companies. We expect Intergeo to return to pre-pandemic dimensions this year, which is great news for the industry. The emerging investments in infrastructure and digitalization represent attractive market potential for Intergeo’s innovative partners.”

Intergeo creates plenty of opportunity for discussion and dialogue, and visitors will benefit from gaining a major update on where the mapping and surveying profession is heading. This year’s edition will once again underline the importance of the role of geospatial applications in finding viable solutions to the key issues of today and tomorrow.
