COWI First European Company to Operate Leica ALS80-HP Scanners

COWI, based in Denmark, is the first mapping company in Europe to start operating two new Leica ALS80HP airborne scanners. The new technology will be used for large area scanning as well as forest assessment, and supporting engineering design services. The scanners will be an essential part of COWI’s workflow that includes a wide range of aircrafts and helicopters as well as data processing facilities and is likely to strengthen the consultancy’s group’s leading position in the airborne Lidar service industry.

COWI has worked in close collaboration with Leica Geosystems since the company invested in the first ALS50 scanner many years ago. The ALS80-HP offers the latest and most powerful solutions in this market and are extremely efficient for second generation high-density national DTMs, explained Dr Simon Musäus, COWI director for the international business line mapping & survey.

The two new systems delivered to COWI have been thoroughly tested and COWI have approved that they are working due to specifications. Test flights with both systems have shown a significant better efficiency than the previous systems. This brand new technology inside the Leica ALS80-HP will provide a significant better point distribution, even under tough flight conditions, commented Poul Nørgård, vice president mapping operations at COWI.

Leica Geosystems is proud to have COWI as the first European customer to upgrade their Lidar fleet to the new market leading ALS80 technology. The extremely high point densities as well as faster acquisition and processing times will allow COWI to realise new applications in the mapping, utility and transportation market, said Dr Hartmut Rosengarten, director of airborne & mobile mapping solutions EMEA at Leica Geosystems.
