Emesent lands US$17M in new funding for AI-powered mapping and robotics

To speed up work on its AI autonomy platform, grow its Aura cloud software and expand across mining, defence, and architecture, engineering and construction (AEC), Emesent has announced US$17 million in new funding. The money will go towards growing production at the Australian autonomous mapping and robotics company's factory in Wacol, Queensland, and towards two of its core platforms: Cortex AI, onboard software that lets equipment navigate and operate fully autonomously even in places with no GPS signal and hazardous conditions, and Aura, a cloud platform for processing, viewing and analysing 3D data.

Emesent's flagship product, Hovermap, is deployed at more than 200 mine sites worldwide and is considered mission-critical equipment by major mining operators including Rio Tinto, BHP and Glencore. The company's broader product line includes the Hovermap STX, a Lidar scanning payload that can be mounted on drones or vehicles, or carried as a backpack; the GX1, an all-in-one scanner combining SLAM, RTK positioning, and 360° imagery capture; the Aura data-processing software; and the Cortex AI autonomous flight software. These are used by clients across mining, AEC, defence and critical infrastructure in more than 40 countries.

Pushing AI and autonomy capabilities

The funding announcement follows strong commercial momentum for the GX1, which recently completed a global AEC roadshow across the Americas, Europe and Asia. Emesent's broader strategy – anchored by Cortex AI and Aura – is to pair its scanning hardware with ongoing software intelligence and cloud services, so customers keep getting more value from their equipment over time.

Emesent CEO Charles Miller said: "This investment accelerates everything we're building at Emesent. NRFC's support means we can scale our manufacturing, push our AI and autonomy capabilities further, and deepen our presence in the sectors that matter most to Australia's future, including mining, defence, and critical infrastructure. Emesent currently employs 109 people across its Australian operations and plans to grow further to meet demand from overseas markets.

Critical segment of the Australian economy

The US$17 million is made up of a US$7 million loan from the National Reconstruction Fund Corporation (NRFC) – Australia's government fund for advanced manufacturing – plus a US$10 million equity investment. This is the first time NRFC has provided this type of loan funding to a deep-tech company, reflecting the fund's willingness to offer flexible, non-dilutive capital to Australian businesses that have already proven they can succeed commercially.

NRFC CEO David Gall said: "Emesent's pioneering physical AI technology was spun out of the CSIRO in 2018, and we are proud to be supporting the commercialization of Australian-developed intellectual property. Robotics and autonomous systems are emerging as critical segments of the Australian economy, and this investment will help anchor these capabilities in Australia – creating highly skilled jobs while strengthening our sovereign capability in sectors that underpin the nation's future."

The equity round was backed by a syndicate reflecting growing confidence in Australian companies working at the intersection of hardware, AI, and autonomous systems. Main Sequence – which has backed Emesent since its Seed and Series A rounds – was joined by Queensland-based QIC Ventures, mining-focused Orion Resource Partners, and pension funds Hostplus and NGS Super.
