GIS for Building and Managing Infrastructure, the latest book from ESRI Press, presents maps from nine countries and 57 organisations, illustrating the versatility of geographic information system (GIS) technology when applied to physical systems and complex operations.

The map book covers a wide range of infrastructure projects in chapters such as 'The North American Natural Gas System' (a look at the supply, transportation and demand of the natural gas market) and 'Wind Atlas for the Languedoc-Roussillon Region' (which maps the potential for wind-generated power in France).

"Private-sector companies need a comprehensive platform on which to plan, design, build and manage infrastructure projects," says ESRI president Jack Dangermond. "Citizens and stakeholders want to see how infrastructure projects will affect their communities. The maps in this book are real-world examples of GIS fulfilling these needs for government, industry and citizens."

This map book is designed to be an important reference guide for city officials and department heads involved in developing or modernising transportation, energy, communications or public works infrastructures. In addition, the projects included in the book can serve as models for infrastructure initiatives such as those funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
