Europe's aerial survey industry sounds the alarm over fuel crisis

The European Association of Aerial Surveying Industries (EAASI) has published an open letter highlighting the impact of rising aviation fuel prices on the sector and the potential consequences for Europe's geospatial data supply. As fuel costs surge and availability tightens, aerial surveying operations face increasing pressure during the peak acquisition season.

Since late February 2026, conflict in the Middle East has driven northwest European aviation fuel benchmarks to record highs of US$1,900 per tonne. Unlike large commercial airlines, the small and medium-sized enterprises that make up the bulk of the aerial surveying sector have no access to financial hedging tools and are forced to buy fuel at spot prices.

Critical window for aerial data acquisition

The timing is particularly damaging. Spring and summer represent the critical window for aerial data acquisition in Europe, when stable weather conditions allow survey aircraft to capture the high-resolution imagery and Lidar data that underpin flood modelling, infrastructure monitoring and digital twin development. A warning from IEA executive director Fatih Birol on 16 April that Europe may have as little as six weeks of jet fuel reserves remaining has sharpened concerns about potential rationing at regional airports.

The stakes extend well beyond the industry itself. Under EU legislation, geospatial and Earth observation datasets are officially classified as high-value datasets, central to the European Green Deal and Europe's broader digital ambitions. A lost flying season, EAASI warns, would mean a serious gap in the data supply chain.

EAASI is calling on authorities to grant priority fuel access to survey operations in any rationing scenario, fast-track sustainable aviation fuel incentives for smaller operators, and reduce the administrative burden on specialized aviation companies.

EAASI’s mission is to promote the benefits of aerial surveying, improve awareness of aerial survey data, and maintain and promote best practices within the industry.
