FIG Working Week 2012 Opens in Rome

This year’s FIG Working Week in the Rome Cavalieri Hotel in the Italian capital has started with the Young Surveyors Conference, supported by Esri and Trimble. At this first special meeting for young surveyors from all over the world, 130 professionals from more than 40 countries gathered in an energetic, dynamic session in which they talked about the future of the surveying profession, the role of social media and IT, and the entrepreneurial spirit needed.

FIG President CheeHai Teo addressed the young surveyors focussing again on the need of a new paradigm entering for our profession.

On Monday there was a full day of sessions. The day ended with a dedicated session on the  Japanese earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 with contribution of Prof. Shunji Murai who spoke about lessons learned after the disaster.

Monday night was reserved to a welcoming ceremony in the Auditorium Parco della Musica where the Roma Sinfonietta Orchestra performed. President CheeHai Teo opened the FIG Working Week 2012 officially during the ceremony mentioning again the new paradigm needed for the geomatics professional calling for innovation and engagement in generating ideas for the future. He emphasised the various roles the surveyor 2.0 should take: Measuring, Modelling and Managing. ‘No development can take place without spatial dimensions and no sustainable development will take place without the footprint of the surveyor’, he concluded. He congratulated the 1,300 delegates, making this event the best-attended FIG Working Week ever.

The working week will continue throughout the week until Thursday afternoon.
