Geomatics Indaba 2015 UAV Airshow Scheduled

GISSA, IMSSA, SAGI and EE Publishers have announced the Geomatics Indaba 2015 UAV Airshow taking place on the public holiday before the Geomatics Indaba 2015 conference, exhibition and training event being held in Ekhuruleni, South Africa, from 11-13 August 2015.

Only registered delegates to the GI 2015 Conference may attend the GI 2015 UAV Airshow on 10 August 2015. Similarly, only exhibitors at the GI 2015 Exhibition on 11, 12 and 13 August 2015 may exhibit and demonstrate their UAVs at the GI 2015 UAV Airshow on 10 August 2015. The GI 2015 UAV Airshow can accommodate 300 delegates.

Diverse range

The GI 2015 UAV Airshow will showcase a diverse range of UAVs with manufacturers and service providers on hand to explain how the various UAVs are assembled, operated and used for accurate data collection. There will also be several flight simulators available at the airshow where delegates may try their hand at flying a UAV. The event is intended to educate and inform the surveying, GIS and geospatial community on how to make best use of this emerging technology.

Various types and makes of UAVs will be exhibited at the GI 2015 UAV Airshow, and there will be demonstrations on the necessary safety-check procedures, practical demonstrations of take-off and landing procedures, as well as flying and data capturing capabilities. Exhibitors will explain the applications for which their products are best suited, and delegates are encouraged to use this opportunity to educate and inform themselves on how to professionally incorporate UAV technology offerings into their current work practices.

Regulations

While it is anticipated that the South African Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) Regulations will be promulgated at the end of March 2015, it is not certain whether the RPA personnel licencing procedures will be in place by 10 August 2015.

Therefore, to ensure that the GI 2015 UAV Airshow complies with the South African regulatory and legislative environment, it is being organised under the rules of the South African Model Aircraft Association (SAMAA). All pilots flying on the day will need to be SAMAA-licenced and the pilots will need to have a SAMAA solo rating. Arrangements have been made to assist pilots with meeting these requirements.
