Geospatial community pays tribute to Rob Mahoney
Rob Mahoney FRICS, a leading figure in the geospatial and surveying professions, passed away on 17 January after a long battle with cancer. He served as Honorary Secretary of RICS from 2010 to 2014 and was a key member of the RICS Governing Council. Known for his exceptional diplomacy and mentoring, he played a crucial role in the development of the geospatial field, particularly during the integration of GIS in the 1990s.
Mahoney worked internationally, notably contributing to post-Soviet land administration in Hungary and advancing the RICS-CLGE relationship. He chaired the RICS Geomatics Faculty Board and was a prolific author of RICS and FIG publications. After retiring in the 2010s, Mahoney continued his work as chair of the International Land Management Standard group.
RICS Director James Kavanagh, who worked closely with Rob Mahoney, shared heartfelt reflections, remembering him as both a remarkable professional and a cherished friend. Mahoney’s influence on the surveying community and beyond was profound. “RICS extends its deepest condolences to Rob’s family. The profession has lost a very great professional surveyor, but we were lucky to have him in the first place," Kavanagh stated.
