Peter Rabley takes the helm as OGC CEO
The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) has announced the appointment of Peter Rabley as CEO. He will build on OGC’s 30-year history, while responding to the pressing need for the consortium to be agile at a time of rapid technological and societal change.
Rabley brings to OGC a wealth of experience from the private, governmental and not-for-profit sectors, including in venture financing, and in developing and implementing scaleup strategies for international not-for-profits. “I am excited and honoured to be appointed as OGC’s CEO,” he said. “OGC is well positioned to build on its incredible 30-year legacy by responding to the ever-increasing rate of change seen in technology and society alike. Opportunities and challenges have never been more apparent, and I see tremendous potential for growth in new markets around the globe. This is the time of geospatial.”
Increased use of geospatial technologies
Prashant Shukle, who serves as chair of the OGC Board of Directors, commented: “I am particularly excited to have Peter Rabley leading OGC. Peter has a proven track record in the public, private and not-for-profit areas of the geospatial industry, and closely aligns with what our key stakeholders and partners were telling us they wanted in a CEO. The OGC Board took the time to get this selection right, and we are very excited about how he fits with our plans for a reinvigorated and repositioned OGC.”
Rabley’s appointment to CEO is timely, coming during OGC’s 30th-anniversary year. OGC is currently taking stock of its successes, while modernizing to respond to a global economy that increasingly uses geospatial technologies across so many domains and applications.
Accelerated, practical and implementable solutions
OGC is one of the world’s largest and longest-standing data and technology consortia. Under Rabley’s leadership, OGC will work with new and existing partners and stakeholders to bring accelerated, practical and implementable solutions to the geospatial community.
Peter Rabley is a technology executive, investor and geographer with over 30 years’ experience in geospatial businesses. He co-founded PLACE, a non-profit organization making mapping data accessible for decision-makers, and managed its strategy and investments. Previously, he led the Property Rights initiative at Omidyar Network and built ILS, a property taxation software firm, before later becoming VP of global business development at Thomson Reuters.
