Postgraduate Geomatics Scholarship in Cape Town

Michael Barry, presently professor of geomatics engineering at the University of Calgary in Canada, has recently created a bursary to support a PhD in geomatics at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. To help get the bursary started, he is calling on fellow alumni and past students to support this initiative.

The Geomatics Land Surveying degree programme at UCT is one of the oldest in the world and it is important for alumni to continue to have a degree that is considered world class. For degree programmes to be accorded and maintain a high status nowadays, it is essential that they produce PhD students who publish in recognised scientific journals in collaboration with their supervisors.

Barry’s University of Calgary profile states he spent 12 years in industry as a surveyor prior to choosing a career in academia in the Department of Geomatics, University of Cape Town, in 1992. He has working experience in GIS, project management, offshore oil platform positioning, cadastral surveying, hydrographic surveying and engineering surveying. He has worked as a private surveyor and project manager in Iraq, Indonesia, Zambia, Botswana and South Africa. As a public servant he worked for the Cape Town City Council for 5 years where he was Principal Land Surveyor.

Mike Barry has served on a number of South African government working groups in cadastral surveying, land tenure, land registration systems and GIS. He has consulted to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). He formulated a GIS education strategy for the Southern African Development Community Environment and Land Management Systems Programme (SADC-ELMS) based on a network of institutions in Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. He has also served on a number of sub-committees and working groups of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG), and he has been vice president of the Council of the Institute of Professional Surveyors of the Western Cape.

His professorship research in Land Tenure and Cadastral Studies at the University of Calgary includes theory and practice of land surveying, development of land and survey law, modern forms of evidence relating to boundaries and land ownership, data structures and algorithms for storing, manipulating and retrieving land information, titles in 3-dimensional space, data structures for 3D cadastres, ocean governance and marine cadastres, digital cadastral databases.
