Sixth StreetMapper System Delivered to Japan

Japan has recently taken delivery of its sixth mobile laser mapping system from 3D Laser Mapping. StreetMapper, a mobile laser mapping system, uses vehicle-mounted sensors to achieve highly accurate measurements while travelling at normal traffic speeds. As a joint development between laser scanning specialist 3D Laser Mapping and navigation specialist IGI, StreetMapper is distributed in the region by the Japanese company Mirukuru.

The latest StreetMapper system will be used by Mirukuru for demonstration purposes and for training and support of both existing and potential StreetMapper users. Shinji Inaba, technical manager at Mirukuru, believes that having their own system means they can demonstrate the potential of the system capturing highly accurate measurements for real-world projects in a wide range of environments. Inaba also points out that his company is now able to support existing customers with hands-on training and frontline support and back-up.

Mirukuru recently held a StreetMapper user meeting which was attended by a number of organisations who were already undertaking mobile laser surveys using the StreetMapper system. The one-day seminar was also attended by survey companies and public sector organisations who were considering adopting the technology.

Five other StreetMapper systems are already in use across Japan. The Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, the national organisation for surveying and mapping, recently took delivery of a StreetMapper Portable system, while construction consultants ASCO are already operating two similar solutions. Asia Air Survey was the first company in Japan to adopt the StreetMapper technology and used the mobile mapping system to assess the damage caused by the earthquake in March 2011.
