Surveyors Told to Oppose LightSquared

American surveyors should respond en masse to the plans of LightSquared to deploy 40,000 base stations providing wireless broadband for the United States. These stations would be using spectrum on the L-band adjacent to that of GPS signals, which would cause devastating interference.

During the Surveying Summit, organised by Esri and ACSM in the weekend preceding the yearly Esri User Conference in San Diego, several sessions were dedicated to the danger for GPS, its industry and stakeholders through the plans of Lightsquared. Despite earlier news, Lightsquared is still working on the deployment of the network. Members of the Save Our GPS Coalition called upon the user community of GPS, surveyors attending the summit, to send objections to the Federal Communications Technology (FCC) before 30th July 2011.

The combined ACSM and Esri Surveying Summit drew hundreds of surveyors throughout the weekend who attended workshops, presentations, the lively exhibition and the social events concluding days of education.
