3D Laser Mapping Launches StreetMapper 2

3D Laser Mapping (United Kingdom) has launched StreetMapper 2, a new modular vehicle-mounted system for the rapid 3D mapping on and off road. Using lasers to 3D map assets and the terrain to millimetre accuracy at speeds of up to 70km an hour, StreetMapper 2 and has been designed as a portable system for equipping different types of vehicle. When fitted to a standard 4 wheel drive vehicle StreetMapper 2 allows surveying off road, extending the scope of use beyond the highway. With easy-fit rack mounting and a roof rack suitable for any 4x4, 3D Laser Mapping is able to... (read more)

Successful 3D Laser Mapping Lidar Workshop

The first event in a series of educational workshops has been hailed as a success by organisers 3D Laser Mapping (UK). Attracting more than 50 practitioners and professionals from public sector organisations and commercial companies, the workshop took place on 28 March 2012 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Delegates were presented with a thorough overview of data collection methods, explored data processing and extraction methodologies, and were offered examples of real-world projects. The first ‘Lidar Applications Workshop’ took place at the Royale Chulan Hotel in Kuala Lumpur and was organised by 3D Laser Mapping in partnership with local surveying company Jalal... (read more)

Fugro Buys 3D Mapping Solutions Company

Fugro has completed the acquisition of Roames Asset Services (Roames), based in Brisbane, Australia, from Ergon Energy (Ergon). Roames (previously a services unit within Ergon) specialises in high-resolution mapping services and solutions for the electricity distribution sector. Roames uses airborne sensors to generate accurate 3D models of electric power transmission networks and surrounding vegetation. The data collected through Lidar and digital imagery are processed in a highly automated way. This enables electric utility companies to take preventative measures to cost-effectively review and maintain their infrastructure and to manage vegetation growth.  The current annual revenue of Roames is around EUR7 million.... Tandem for 3D Corridor Mapping

Simultaneous Geo-data Capture from the Ground and from the Air
3D mapping of roads, pipelines and other linear structures – often called corridors – is an important geomatics activity. Geodata acquisition technologies, which are increasingly used for corridor mapping and also for 3D mapping of urban areas, are mobile mapping systems and unmanned airborne systems. Can these two technologies be combined for simultaneously capturing corridors from the ground and from the air to improve efficiency, completeness and accuracy? This was the leading question in the mapKITE project. In this article, the authors explain the concepts underlying the project and prove their feasibility through pilot studies.  MapKITE – developed within the... (read more)

First Zebedee 3D Mobile Mapping Project

Australian researchers are using the novel mobile laser 3D mapping system called Zebedee to preserve some of the country’s oldest and most culturally significant heritage sites. The handheld 3D mapping system is developed by CSIRO and can scan an environment as an operator walks through it. The new joint research initiative between CSIRO and The University of Queensland aims to collect detailed 3D maps of historic sites of Moreton Bay. With the assistance of Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services, the research team have collected data from a number of heritage sites including the 19th-century Brisbane River defences at Fort Lytton...
