First Zebedee 3D Mobile Mapping Project

Australian researchers are using the novel mobile laser 3D mapping system called Zebedee to preserve some of the country’s oldest and most culturally significant heritage sites. The handheld 3D mapping system is developed by CSIRO and can scan an environment as an operator walks through it. The new joint research initiative between CSIRO and The University of Queensland aims to collect detailed 3D maps of historic sites of Moreton Bay. With the assistance of Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services, the research team have collected data from a number of heritage sites including the 19th-century Brisbane River defences at Fort Lytton... 3D Laser Mapping Launches Cityscape Mapper

3D Laser Mapping (United Kingdom) has developed a mobile cityscape mapper that captures highly accurate 3D modelling data of buildings and streets. The development is an enhancement to StreetMapper, the vehicle-mounted laser mapping system that is already well proven in terrain and highway mapping. StreetMapper is a result of a joint venture with German guidance and navigation specialist IGI mbH. The latest developments for ‘architectural surveying' are currently being evaluated with cityscape mapping projects underway with universities in Germany.            IGI have upgraded their TERRAControl navigation system specially for city modelling applications where there is reduced GPS visibility due to... TatukGIS and Geological 3D Mapping

TatukGIS recently implemented support for geological 3D maps for incorporating multiple, vertically spaced digital elevation models and other layers in the same map project. This was done in response to requests from some customers, mostly geologists, for the ability to create map projects involving multiple 3D surfaces. Such a project might involve, for example, an aerial image draped on a 3D DEM surface topology layer along with 3D representations of other layers representing perhaps underground bedrock, hydrology, infrastructure, or modelled hydrocarbon and mineral deposits. The vertical level of each layer can be managed by using its 3D FalseZ property, such... (read more)

Full Frontal Mapping in 3D

Cliff surveys are traditionally performed with fixed-wing aircraft that collect nadir photos. However, one particular California bluff required the cliff’s face to be surveyed for an erosion study. A photogrammetry company used the opportunity to test the viability of accurately triangulating oblique images and mapping them in 3D stereo. The company not only met tight data specifications, but also developed a new technique for cliff-face surveys. Photogrammetry specialist Robert Lafica and his company, Central Coast Aerial Mapping, have been producing detailed 3D stereo-based topographic maps, orthophotos and orthomosaics and surface models since 1977. Although he has performed many traditional cliff... (read more)

Fugro Buys 3D Mapping Solutions Company

Fugro has completed the acquisition of Roames Asset Services (Roames), based in Brisbane, Australia, from Ergon Energy (Ergon). Roames (previously a services unit within Ergon) specialises in high-resolution mapping services and solutions for the electricity distribution sector. Roames uses airborne sensors to generate accurate 3D models of electric power transmission networks and surrounding vegetation. The data collected through Lidar and digital imagery are processed in a highly automated way. This enables electric utility companies to take preventative measures to cost-effectively review and maintain their infrastructure and to manage vegetation growth.  The current annual revenue of Roames is around EUR7 million....
