3D Mapping Portal

Agency9 (Sweden) has entered into a partnership with the aerial survey company Slagboom en Peeters in The Netherlands, to deliver a geoportal for which users can view its data products, currently “Geo-Oblique” and Orthophoto in one seamless integrated view. Unlike other portals in the market the user can conveniently see an object from all possible angles and use the data view that is best for the application. Additional data types will be introduced later this year. Adding Oblique Viewer extends the value of the 3DMaps platform as the leading solution for visualisation of 3D geospatial data. The combination of different... (read more)

Column: 3D Mobile Mapping

Over the last few years street-level mobile mapping and reality capturing has quietly become one of the most important geospatial mapping technologies. There are already hundreds of mapping vehicles collecting vast amounts of geospatial data. But what we see today is only the start, believes Stephan Nebiker from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW).   In the future, accurate and dense 3D representations of the urban environment along traffic corridors and within buildings will be captured and created fully automatically and upated regularly if not in real-time. These digital realities will serve a multitude of purposes, including... (read more)

3D Laser Mapping Expands in SA

3D Laser Mapping, UK, has appointed Adriaan Oeschger to the position of Key Account Manager. Oeschger's surveying background dates back more than twenty years working in the mining industry and most recently for a distributor of survey, measurement and geospatial solutions in South Africa. He will join the existing team, providing support and development for key accounts across the region.   Oeschger was employed for almost fifteen years by Lonmin Platinum, the third largest and lowest cost producer of platinum, at their Karee mine. He trained and specialised in both underground and surface surveying, as well as the plotting of... (read more)

Successful 3D Laser Mapping Lidar Workshop

The first event in a series of educational workshops has been hailed as a success by organisers 3D Laser Mapping (UK). Attracting more than 50 practitioners and professionals from public sector organisations and commercial companies, the workshop took place on 28 March 2012 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Delegates were presented with a thorough overview of data collection methods, explored data processing and extraction methodologies, and were offered examples of real-world projects. The first ‘Lidar Applications Workshop’ took place at the Royale Chulan Hotel in Kuala Lumpur and was organised by 3D Laser Mapping in partnership with local surveying company Jalal... (read more)

3D Laser Mapping for Waste Monitoring

A laser scanning system is to improve safety of iron ore extraction in South Africa. The Riegl laser scanner forms an integral part of a Waste Spreader Positioning System (WSPS) developed by Stone Three Venture Technology in partnership with Reutech Mining. The WSPS is designed to ensure the safety of machine operators by calculating a safe zone of operation on the mine heap and monitoring the activities of the Waste Spreader within this defined zone.   The Riegl LMS-Z210ii, supplied by 3D Laser Mapping, is a rugged sensor designed for the rapid acquisition of high-quality 3D images in the harshest... Enabling UAV-based 3D Mapping

Pix4D
Pix4D has developed next-generation software that automatically combines raw images captured by lightweight Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to produce accurate measurements and visualisation of the environment. This enables timely, on-demand local 3D mapping. What if images taken by consumer-grade cameras could be combined to compute accurate 3D environments? This is the question that prompted Dr Christoph Strecha’s research 10 years ago. Back then, the first megapixel cameras were just starting to appear on the consumer market. Christoph’s research led to the development of techniques to produce 3D reconstructions in a fully automated way from a set of standard digital images.... (read more)
