The Alluring Promise of 5G

Imagine a world in which high-speed internet is available everywhere, writes Wim van Wegen in his latest column. Perhaps you’ve just ticked skydiving in the Grand Canyon off your bucket list and are keen to share the breathtaking video footage with your family and friends back home (even if they live in a rural backwater). Wouldn’t it be great to be able to transfer gigabytes of data to any corner of the planet in the blink of an eye, using just your smartphone? Not so long ago this indeed belonged in the realms of science fiction, but it is now... (read more)

(R)evolution in (G)SDI

Being responsible for R&D in Remote Sensing at the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture, I first met the wider earth-observation community at the conference “Earth Observations and Global Change Decision-Making, 1990: A National Partnership”, where the luncheon speaker was Senator Albert Gore. The global change issue gave birth to the “Mission to Planet Earth”, which called for collaboration between academia and policy makers. The need for a similar level of co-operation between all nations in Geographic Information Systems and Services was articulated some years later, at launch of the Global Spatial Data Infrastructure (GSDI) initiative. While US presidential decrees facilitated access... (read more)

Topcon 3.4 G3 Firmware

Topcon's Version 3.4 G3 receiver firmware upgrades the performance and usability of all Topcon GNSS receiver platforms including the industry-leading GR-3 and new GRS-1 systems. The 3.4 G3 firmware is the first to be able to automatically detect the make of the network receiver creating corrections for the rover and applying the proper bias to the GLONASS system measurements contained in the GNSS network solution.     Different manufacturers have different offsets (or biases) for the GLONASS constellation of satellites. As each hardware manufacturer outputs different values for GLONASS measurements, it has been a challenge for a customer to mix... (read more)
