The many natural disasters taking place annually all over the world are often caused by weather phenomena and one of the most affected fields is agriculture. Remote sensing, GPS, GIS and ICT appear to be effective tools in countering disaster, and this has been the main driving force behind establishing the UTEEDA network in six countries in Iberian America. The First Co-ordination Meeting took place in Toluca, Mexico in February 2006 and we interviewed three initiators of the network: Dr Damaso R Ponvert–Delisles from Cuba, D. Zahalka Joins Topcon Precision Agriculture

Albert Zahalka, a former executive officer with two global Fortune 500 companies, has been named senior vice president of Topcon Precision Agriculture (TPA), a business unit of Topcon Positioning Systems (TPS). Zahalka replaces Dave Vaughn. In his new role, Zahalka will direct the company’s agriculture operations from Adelaide, Australia. The announcement was made by Ray O’Connor, TPS president and CEO. Sensor Fusion for Precision Agriculture

Low-cost Lidar Camera System without GNSS
Precision agriculture has considerably benefited from the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, often combined with active ranging sensors like Lidar to gather information from underneath the crops, but existing systems are relatively expensive for the farming sector. In this project, researchers in Canada have used an integrated sensor orientation method for the local referencing of Lidar measurements. Their approach is based on loosely coupled, image-aided inertial navigation in which the pose of the camera replaces the GNSS measurements. The result is a low-cost solution that is useful for capturing topographic data of inaccessible areas as well as in GNSS-denied environments.... (read more)

Turkish Software for Iranian Agriculture

Turkish software company Netcad's geographic information systems and engineering solutions are being implemented with success in Iran's agriculture sector. Within this context, 140,000 parcels of agricultural land are being evaluated and enrolled into the geo-database. Successive implementations bring in new enquiries. Using and managing the agricultural recourses is also important for the Turkey's neighbour country Iran as the rest of the world. Charter for Agriculture Domain Working Group

An Agriculture Domain Working Group of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) is being chartered as an open forum for the discussion and presentation of interoperability requirements, use cases, pilots and implementations of OGC standards in the agricultural domain. Initiators of the new SWG seek comments from the public on the draft charter. The comment period closes on 31 July 2014.
