Agriculture Field Survey System Using GIS Solutions

Inaccurate data collection may result in unwise decisions. To precisely record, measure, and publish the agricultural data in Indonesia, the Ministry of Agriculture of the country developed an Agriculture Field Survey System using GIS solutions to effectively operate agriculture and funding schemes. Indonesia is a country rich in natural resources inSoutheast Asia. Its agricultural production is the key to the economy ofIndonesiawhich contributes 15% to the GDP, and the farm labour accounts for up to 43% of total employment. To facilitate the sustainable agricultural development,Indonesiagovernment has invested more than USD7 million annually in launching diverse grant-in-aid projects. With the mission... (read more)

Charter for Agriculture Domain Working Group

An Agriculture Domain Working Group of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) is being chartered as an open forum for the discussion and presentation of interoperability requirements, use cases, pilots and implementations of OGC standards in the agricultural domain. Initiators of the new SWG seek comments from the public on the draft charter. The comment period closes on 31 July 2014. Few human activities are more tied to location, geography and the geospatial landscape than agriculture. Farming businesses, food supply chains and public agricultural policies are increasingly tied as well to quantitative data about crops, soils, water, weather, markets, energy and... (read more)

SenseFly Unveils UAS for Precision Agriculture

Swiss mini-drone manufacturer senseFly has announced the eBee Ag, a fully autonomous aerial imaging drone for precision agriculture applications. The UAV features a wide range of camera options and fully autonomous operation: flying, acquiring images, and landing itself. The eBee Ag enables growers and crop consultants to become much more precise in their work, said Jean-Christophe Zufferey, CEO of senseFly. The detail provided by its customised cameras and its software’s index calculations allows customers to analyse crop conditions remotely and in high detail. This means less time wasted on manual checks and less reliance on low-resolution satellite images or costly... (read more)

Precision Agriculture for People, Planet and Profit

A Policy Perspective on Data-driven Farming
The Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV) has a clear vision: sufficient food that is also healthy for everyone – financially healthy for farmers, growers and fishermen, healthy for consumers and good for nature and the environment. In a nation as small and populous as The Netherlands, that is not without its challenges. Furthermore, the Dutch government is focusing heavily on expertise and innovation in order to strengthen the international position of the country’s agricultural sector. Precision agriculture has been identified as one of the ways to achieve these goals. But does data automatically mean knowledge and... (read more)

Pix4D Unveils New Precision Agriculture Solutions

Pix4D has launched Pix4Dmapper Ag: photogrammetric software that converts multispectral images into agriculture-specific maps for better crop management and analysis. The software has been released in conjunction with Sequoia: a multispectral sensor from Parrot designed specifically for precision agriculture. The most important part about this joint release is the fact that the low price enables it to be deployed at the farming level, and not just the research level, said Pix4D founder and CEO Christoph Strecha. With a 16MP RGB camera, 5 Ag-dedicated sensors (Red, Green, NIR, Red Edge, Luminosity), 64GB built-in memory, GPS and IMU, Sequoia weighs only 110 grams and can... (read more)

GeoMarc Watermarking Software to USDA Foreign Agriculture Service

GCS Research, a prime vendor on the ASRC Management Services (ASRC MS) Prime Vendor Contract for the USDA, has been awarded a contract to provide GeoMarc digital watermarking technology to the USDA Foreign Agriculture Service (USDA FAS). GeoMarc allows the USDA FAS to embed an imperceptible digital watermark into the pixels of satellite imagery. The watermark contains key pieces of metadata that is seared into the pixels of the imagery and will remain intact through the life of the image.    The USDA FAS will leverage GeoMarc technology to embed an acquisition date/time stamp, among other things, as part of...
